Tennessee Tax Free Weekend

Save money this weekend on everything you need for going back to school! Shoppers can buy qualifying items—clothing and school supplies less than $100 in value per item and computers less than $1,500—without paying local or state sales tax from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9. Anyone can participate, regardless of whether or not they’re a student.

Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash

When: August 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 from 8-10 p.m. and August 9 from 2-4 p.m.

Artistic Civic Theatre is opening tonight with the musical "Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash" featuring music from the iconic artist’s songbook for this unique musical about “love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and love and family.” Come to listen to your favorite Johnny Cash songs such as "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues” and "A Boy Named Sue.” For more information or to purchase tickets, call the ACT box office at 706-278-4796.

Artful Yoga on the Row: American Impressions on the Southside

When: 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Where: Warehouse Row, 1110 Market Street 
Cost: Free

To celebrate its "Monet and American Impressionism" exhibit, the Hunter Museum of American Art is taking its reoccurring Artful Yoga class to Warehouse Row with a special program. The class will begin with an open discussion guided by Hunter Museum Curator of Education Adera Causey surrounding a reproduced art piece from the exhibit. Immediately following, Yoga Landing owner instructor Jessica Jollie will lead attendees in yoga exercises, with live classical music and large-scale art projections of the Hunter's impressionist collection providing a soothing, sensory-laden backdrop. Be sure to bring your own yoga mat!

#SHARKNOOGA: Sharknado at IMAX

When: 7-10 p.m. 
Where: Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Theatre, 1 Broad Street
Cost: $20-$25

Looking for an evening of movies, food, cocktails and…sharks? The Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Theatre will host a double screening of Sharknado and Sharknado 2: The Second One at its #SHARKNOOGA event. Enjoy snacks, bar and expert advice from weather and shark experts on hand at the event—just in case you want to prepare for the potential of a sharknado. This event is open to everyone ages 18+. Valid photo ID will be required at the door.


Wednesday, August 12

Signing Storytime for Families

When: 11:30 a.m.
Where: South Chattanooga Public Library, 925 W. 39th Street
Cost: Free

Families with children ages 0-5 are welcome at this weekly Signing Storytime event, held Wednesdays at the South Chattanooga Library. Children and parents can learn new signs each week through games, songs and stories. The addition of sign language is not only helpful to promote literacy and language early on in a child’s development but also helps to relieve communication frustration between child and caregiver.
