September 11-27

Violet: The Musical

When: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and Sundays from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Where: Ensemble Theatre Of Chattanooga, 104 N. Tuxedo Ave
Cost: $15-20

Violet, a young girl from rural North Carolina, sets out on a journey to heal a scar that disfigures her face. What she discovers on this journey is that her true scars, the ones below the surface, need the most healing. Since Violet's bus journey takes her clear across the state of Tennessee from the North Carolina border to Oklahoma, so does the musical score. From blues and early rock to old country and high gospel, Tesori's music will have you tapping your toes and wiping your tears. Park(ing) Day

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Broad Street and MLK Blvd., Downtown Chattanooga
Cost: Free

Park(ing) Day is an international event that reclaims metered parking spots for a day to create temporary public spaces and occurs the third Friday of every September. This event encourages businesses, civic groups and individuals to convert parking spaces to extra public space for a day. Past participants have created “parks” with things like a drinking vinegars stand, a hammock park, a tailgate party and blacksmithing demonstrations. Outstanding parks typically include activities for people to enjoy, places for people to sit and items like plants and rugs that soften the normally harsh concrete appearance of a parking space. For more information, visit parkingday.org.
