It’s that time of year again when the summer break has come to an end and families are gearing up for the beginning of the school year. Whether your children will be attending school in person, online, or home school, preparing your house is one of the best ways to set your child up for success. Here are our top 6 favorite ways to prepare your home for your students to have the best school year yet!

1. Message board/family calendar

Between your work schedule, appointments, sports, and after-school activities keeping up with everybody’s schedule can be chaotic and overwhelming. The best way to organize your week is with a family message center. Keeping a family calendar will help keep up with everybody’s events and also make sure you don’t have any overlapping events. It’s also a great way to communicate with each other. By having a space for quick reminders or even just to wish them a great day, a message center keeps everything in one place which is key to staying organized.

2. Backpack station

It is easy to walk into your house and drop all of your belongings as you go. Bags here, shoes there, keys… wait, where did I put those? Having a designated place to put your backpacks, sports bags, etc will help everybody keep up with their belongings as well as keep the house from being messy. You could spruce up your mudroom or even just add a cute bench or hooks by the door. It doesn’t have to be overly complicated or a grand Pinterest-perfect design, but it does need to be organized. Practice with your kids making them place their items in the designated area first thing after they walk through the door to create positive habits. Having this designated space is also a great way to make sure they’re prepared in the morning and don’t forget anything as they head out in the morning.

3. Stock up on cleaning supplies

Sharing isn’t always caring these days. School time means being in a classroom with a lot of other people which makes sharing germs way too easy. Make sure you stock up on cleaning supplies to keep your household healthy. Also, don’t forget about your teachers! They’ll need supplies as well to help keep your kids safe at school. Be sure to send extra cleaning supplies if you’re able!

4. Homework station

A homework station or desk is a great way to help your kids succeed this school year. It’s easy to get distracted by the TV, electronics, toys, or what’s happening outside. Having a place specifically for homework is a great way to help them stay on task. A homework station also helps prevent your kitchen or dining room table from being taken over by project supplies, papers, and books.

5. Morning Checklist

One of the best ways we can help our children succeed (and sometimes the hardest thing) is by teaching them to be independent. Even when they’re as young as kindergarten there are simple tasks they can do themselves every morning. Create a morning checklist for your children to help make sure they are prepared for the day and reminders to make sure things are done properly. For young children, it can be as simple as prompting them to ask themselves-- is your shirt facing the right direction? Are your shoes on the right feet? For older children, your lists might include making sure things are packed for the day like homework, sports equipment for practice, lunch, etc. Not only does teaching your children to be independent help set them up for success, but it also gives you as the parent room to focus on other tasks during your busy morning.

6. Lunch section in the refrigerator/pantry

Creating a lunch station in your refrigerator and pantry will help simplify your decisions for this everyday tasks. You have all of your options in one spot which eliminates rummaging through shelves trying to pack a lunchbox. Having your lunch options set and ready to go make your life much easier and also helps create a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing kitchen which is always a plus!
