7 Spring Cleaning Projects to Help Sell Your Home

It's that time of year again! Although many of us dedicate time each day to maintaining a clean home, there are just some things that get put off. Now’s the time to dive head first into deep cleaning—but don’t worry, you won’t have to tackle these again until next year.

1. Let the light in

Wash the windows inside and out, clean the blinds, dust any light fixtures and replace any burnt-out bulbs. If curtains are feeling dusty and dingy, start at the top with a handheld vacuum and make your way down each panel. If they’re machine washable, go for it as long as it’s on cold and gentle cycle. Rehang immediately so as to avoid wrinkles. This simple clean can do wonders, as a room filled with light will feel more warm and inviting.

2. Deep clean bathrooms

This is the time of year to remove hard water buildup, scrub dirty group and re-caulk tubs, showers and sinks if needed. One of the best ways to get rid of lime buildup around the faucet it is to lay paper towels over the fixture, soak it with vinegar and let it set for an hour. The deposits will soften and become easier to remove. As for cleaning grout, start with a mop to get surface dirt, then break out an old electric toothbrush to make the hands and knees scrubbing a little easier.

3. Refresh floors

Steam clean all carpets, use a wood-cleaning product on hardwood floors, and consider professional cleaning for tile or marble. Dingy walls, ceilings and floors are a turn-off to potential buyers.

4. Replace popcorn ceilings

This is a little more of a process than the average spring cleaning, but it will totally pay off for trying to sell your home! Today’s buyers are not looking for outdated popcorn ceilings, so it’s a good idea to go ahead and get those taken care of now.

5. De-clutter and organize

Be sure to go through your home before photos are taken. Keep only the essentials, and put everything else in storage or give it away. You want your home to look as spacious and clean as possible, which means all of the knick-knacks, excessive wall art, etc., should be put away. And don’t forget to purge closets as well! Buyers want to know there is a lot of storage space in a home, and if yours looks like it’s bursting at the seams, it’s not going to be appealing.

6. Put on a fresh coat of paint

A new coat of interior and exterior paint dramatically improves the appearance of your home and makes it feel less “lived-in.” This is particularly necessary if you’ve chosen colors other than neutral to paint your home. You might like bubblegum pink walls in your home, but many buyers will not be excited about it. Try to stick with neutral colors that will appeal to the widest audience.

7. Clean up kitchen

This is the time for a heavy duty clean. Take out the contents of the pantry, refrigerator and freezer and toss any items that are out of date. Wipe out the fridge shelves with soapy water and wipe down cabinets/cabinet fronts. Clean inside of stove and wipe down microwave. Polish all appliance fronts, light fixtures and stovetop. Clean countertops and reorganize drawers, tossing any junk. The kitchen is a major selling point for buyers, and if yours is spotless, it will make it stand out.
