National Park City

Our gorgeous city has recently achieved a remarkable distinction: it is now North America's first National Park City! This designation, awarded by the National Park City Foundation, "recognizes urban areas that integrate nature into the fabric of city life, promoting outdoor living, environmental stewardship, and cultural appreciation".

The path to this achievement was a community-driven effort that spanned several years. The campaign began with a vision to celebrate, elevate, and conserve the unique people, places, civic spirit, and cultures of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River Valley. The National Park City charter was developed with input from over 75 community leaders. This charter outlined seven core commitments:

  1. Unrivaled Access to Nature: Ensuring everyone has the opportunity to explore natural wonders.
  2. A Culture of Outdoor Activity: Embedding outdoor recreation in every neighborhood.
  3. Environmental Stewardship and Education: Leading efforts to protect nature for future generations.
  4. Inclusive and Sustainable Development: Promoting growth that ensures equitable access to natural treasures.
  5. Community and Cultural Enrichment: Integrating arts and culture with nature.
  6. Food and Agriculture: Supporting sustainable practices for healthier communities.
  7. Arts and Creativity: Showcasing Southern and historical traditions through local art.

To gain official recognition, Chattanooga needed to demonstrate widespread community support. This involved collecting over 5,600 signatures from residents and compiling a comprehensive "journey book" that showed the city's commitment to nature and public spaces.

Being designated as a National Park City is more than just a fancy title; it signifies a commitment to a sustainable and vibrant urban environment. For residents and potential movers, this means living in a city that prioritizes green spaces, outdoor activities, and environmental education. It fosters a community where nature and urban life coexist harmoniously. This designation also positions our city as a leader in urban sustainability, setting an example for other cities to follow. It reflects a collective effort to build a city that values its natural resources and strives to protect them for future generations.

For those considering a move here, this designation offers the opportunity to be part of a forward-thinking city that values its natural surroundings. Our recognition as North America's first National Park City is a testament to the city's commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and the preservation of its natural heritage. We hope you'll see it as an invitation to live in a city where nature and urban life thrive together!
