Hit The Trails for National Trails Day on June 3

Posted by on Tuesday, May 30th, 2017 at 4:36pm.

The Chattanooga area is home to so many trails, and on June 3, it’s time to celebrate them in honor of National Trails Day!

Whether you want to visit a trail to volunteer and do maintenance work or go as an appreciative user, here are five places and activities perfect for celebrating the day.

Bring Fido for a hike at Cloudland Canyon State Park

Hit the trails with your favorite furry friend on this easy 2 mile round trip hike. There will be some opportunities for your dog to play in the streams along the way. Meet at the Backcountry Camping parking area. All dogs must be on a 6-foot leash and a $5 park fee applies unless you are a season pass holder. Trail maps and driving directions to the event will be available at the park Visitor's Center. Upon entering the park continue straight once you pass the parking attendant, for two miles. At the intersection (you will have a campground on your left) turn right. Follow the road until there is the option of turning or going into a gravel lot. Park in the gravel lot and look for the Friend's of Cloudland Canyon volunteer and her golden retriever. For more information, visit gastateparks.org/CloudlandCanyon.

Volunteer for National Trails Day at the Chickamauga Battlefield

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park and the American Hiking Society are looking for volunteers for National Trails Day on Saturday, June 3 at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers should meet at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center (3370 LaFayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe, GA 30742) and can expect to return to the visitor center at noon. Tools and supplies will be provided, and all volunteers are asked to wear long pants with sturdy, close-toed shoes. If you plan to volunteer, please RSVP by emailing will_wilson@nps.gov or by calling 423-752-5213 x137.

Explore Audubon Acres for FREE

Chattanooga's oldest wildlife sanctuary, Audubon Acres is a 130 acre natural area, formerly the family farm of Robert Sparks Walker. Walker set the area aside in 1944 for preservation of it's natural and historic qualities for the perpetual enjoyment of Chattanoogans and visitors from around the world. Audubon Acres offers more than 5 miles of hiking trails over 130 acres along South Chickamauga Creek along with abundant opportunities for picnicking, wildlife viewing, and photography. Tubing, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking are also permitted during the summer months. The visitor center houses a small gift shop and archeological museum. Also on the property are the historic Spring Frog Cabin, a "Trail of Tears" site and the birthplace of Robert Sparks Walker, and Little Owl Village, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In honor of National Trails Day, they'll be waiving the admission fee all day, so go explore and enjoy Audubon Acres, located at 900 N Sanctuary Rd.

About the event

The only nationwide celebration of trails, National Trails Day was launched by The American Hiking Society in 1993 to increase awareness about trails and those who maintain and create them, as well as to garner support from partners and volunteers for future trail-building projects.
