Chattanooga Brewery Scene

Posted by on Tuesday, May 16th, 2017 at 9:13am.

If you missed the Chattabrewga craft brew festival this past weekend, don’t worry. You don’t need a special event as an excuse to check out some of the Scenic City’s best breweries. We started out with Big River Grille and Brewing Works as our only brewery back in the early ‘90s, and now the city is bursting at the seams with new brewing companies (and more on the way!). Now that our city is becoming such a hub for brews, we’re serving up a round of some of our favorites for you to try.

Mad Knight Brewing Company

BASEMENT of: 4015 Tennessee Ave.
madknightbrewing.com

This St. Elmo brewery is so new, we’re not even sure the paint’s totally dry yet. Mad Knight Brewing Company just opened it’s doors to feature their beers including the Crazy Otto Saison, which they describe as “light, complex, fruity and crushable” and the Big Bossman IPA which offers a crisp taste and an “intense amount of mango aroma.” We love this place for their cool outdoor seating, which is perfect for the weather lately. Go try it out and tell us what you think!

Open: Friday 4:30-10 p.m., Saturday: Noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday 3-8 p.m.

Chattanooga Brewing Co.

1804 Chestnut St
chattabrew.com

Located in the Southside, this brewing company is home to some of the city’s most recognized beers. The Chestnut Street Brown Ale, named after the street that Chattanooga Brewing Co calls home, is a full flavored not too hoppy brown ale with a subtle chocolate flavor. Another local favorite, the Chichbock Maibock, is a German style dark lager with caramel and chocolate malts that was inspired by the North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy and its Chickstock music festival. Chattanooga Brewing Co. not only offers brews, but also a full food menu including appetizers like the Beer Cheese Nachos (because duh) and entrees like the Chatt Brew Burger and the Hot Chick, a Bluff View Bakery dough stuffed habanero beer marinated buffalo chicken, mozzarella, and bleu cheese sandwich.

Open: Monday-Thursday from 3-10 p.m. (ish), Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.  to midnight and Sunday from Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.(ish)

Moccasin Bend Brewing Company

3210 South Broad Street
bendbrewingbeer.com/#top

Chattanooga’s second-oldest brewery, Moccasin Bend Brewing Company has been creating unique beers since 2007. Now in a new location on Broad Street, they have more space than ever to host you, your friends and the weekly open mic night on Thursday nights. Try some of their interesting offerings like the New South Chocolate Stout (nitro), the Coffee Cult (a stout featuring Mad Priest coffee) or the Tart In Tartan (a sour ale). Although they don’t serve food, guests are allowed to BYOSnacks and tours are available to book online.

Open: Tuesdays 4-9 p.m., Wednesdays-Fridays 5 p.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Sunday 2-10 p.m.

Hutton & Smith Brewing Company

431 East Martin Luther King Blvd #120
huttonandsmithbrewing.com

With a beer list too long to even begin to try to cover them all, you can tell that Hutton & Smith Brewing Company has been busy since opening the local brewery in 2015. The MLK location offers beer on tap, like the Vadose Zone Vanilla Stout, a mildly bitter stout balanced by the creamy sweet mouthfeel of vanilla, the On-Sight Alt, an award-winning Northern German Altbier, and the Coffee IPA, their IPA infused with cold-press coffee from Mayfly Coffee. Don’t go to the tap room in search of food, but you can leave with a growler or a "crowler," a 32-ounce combination of a can and a growler.

Open: Tuesday-Thursday 5-10 p.m., Friday-Saturday noon to midnight

Terminal Brewhouse

No. 6 14th Street
terminalbrewhouse.com

The Terminal Brewhouse’s tagline “Craft Beer. Crafty Food.” is about all the description this iconic local pub and grub stop needs. Their beers, including some of Chattanooga’s favorites like the Rock Out With Your Bock Out maibock and The White Shadow Belgian white, are served in several other locations across town. Beyond the options The Terminal has on tap, they also brew some amazing seasonal beers like the Global Warmer, their caramel colored malty version of a winter warmer with clove, cinnamon and pepper spices, that rotate frequently. Out of all of the Scenic City’s breweries, this one boasts the fullest restaurant menu with some dishes so good it’s worth going even if you don’t want a beer (*gasp*). Try the West by God salad which includes grilled steak and french fries over house greens, candied pecans, tomatoes, onions, and bleu cheese crumbles, the Dirty Hippy hoagie stuffed with marinated portobello mushrooms, onions, green and red bell peppers, provolone, and sprouts served with cajun mayo, or one of their amazing pizza’s served up on Niedlov’s pizza dough. Yum.

Open everyday 11 a.m. to midnight

Oddstory Brewing Co.

336 East MLK BLVD
http://oddstorybrewing.co/

One of the newest additions to Chattanooga, Oddstory Brewing Co.’s "indoor beer garden," just opened its doors last fall. This craft beer hub, which has 12 options on tap, offers a different feel than others in town with more community style seating and less of an emphasis on TV watching. Oddstory’s three flagship brews include the Belgian Blonde, American Pale Ale and Vienna Lager, which pair well with the rotating menu of small plates offered.

Open: Tuesday-Thursday 4-10 p.m., Friday-Saturday noon to 11 p.m.

Big Frog Brewing Co.

2122 Dayton Blvd.
bigfrogbrewery.com

This new brewery’s name was inspired by the Big Frog Wilderness, the largest wilderness area in the USA east of the Mississippi and located almost entirely in Tennessee, and also the owner’s own nickname. It doesn’t get more homegrown than that, and we love that we can now support this veteran-owned company at its Red Bank tasting room which opened last summer.

Open: Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5-9 p.m.
