Hello, first day of Spring! The weather may not have gotten the memo, but that won’t deter us from starting our spring cleaning. With the new season comes the time to refresh your home and tend to any home maintenance items you may have been putting off. Spring cleaning usually consists of decluttering every room, detailed scrubbing around the house, and changing out seasonal decor. The lists of to dos can sometimes be longer than we anticipated, which can make it easy to miss a few items.

To help you keep up with your spring cleaning, we’ve put together a list of areas that are commonly missed to add to your checklist.

Ceiling fans and light fixtures

Ceiling fans and light fixtures can often get overlooked especially if they are constantly on. Don’t forget to switch off the fans and dust them. One handy trick you could try if quite a bit of dust has accumulated, place an old pillow case over each fan blade as you dust to catch any falling debris and prevent it from landing on you or your floors.

Baseboards and molding

This task can be easily overlooked due to the fact that you simply just don’t want to. This one can require a bit of manual labor by either crawling on the floor or trying to reach high or hard to reach areas. A tip for once you’ve scrubbed the baseboard and molding, use a mop to clean them as maintenance as it can stretch reach places easier. Maintaining difficult areas makes the task a little less daunting when it comes time to scrub.

Window sills, blinds, and curtains

Now that we have more sunlight throughout the day, cleaning the windows is important to allow more natural sunlight into your home. While you’re cleaning the glass, don’t forget about the rest of the window. This is a great time to inspect each window to make sure there are no cracks or damage that may be allowing air in and out of your home. Also, don’t forget any window coverings. Oftentimes we move them out of the way to clean the window and forget to clean the blinds, curtains, etc.

Under and behind furniture

We know we have to do it. While it is so much easier to just clean around the furniture, things like dust, toys, papers, etc will get trapped under or behind furniture. Take this time to move everything out from its original spot to clean. It’ll be worth it!

Inside kitchen appliances (e.g. oven, microwave, refrigerator)

Even if you regularly wipe down your kitchen appliances, they often still need a good scrub. Removing interior pieces of each appliance will allow you to scrub every bit of baked food or spills off. This is also a good opportunity to pull out the appliances from the walls to clean. Crumbs and liquid easily find their way into the cracks between the counter tops and your appliances.

Shower curtains and liners

Shower curtains and liners are easy to overlook because they’re rinsed fairly often with soap and water, right? However, that is the problem. Soap scum can build up and trapped moisture can cause things mold and mildew to grow.

Air vents and filters

Don’t forget to clean your vents and replace your filters! With allergy season upon us, this will help with cleaner air inside your home. Not only is it important for cleanliness, but this can also help improve your HVAC efficiency.

Door Knobs & Light Switches

Another area that is easy to miss are the areas we use on a daily basis. Door knobs and light switches are often used multiple times a day and can develop build up pretty quickly. These areas are also often forgotten because they’re relatively small. A simple wipe and disinfectant will do the trick!

Trash cans and recycling bins

One place of your home that can start smelling really quickly are your bins. Just because it is a garbage bin doesn’t mean that it has to smell like trash. A wipe down to remove any leaked liquids or spots will keep your home looking and smelling fresh.

Outdoor areas (e.g. patio, deck, garage)

This can often get overlooked, specially right now, because of the weather. Sometimes it’s still cold outside or maybe you put it off because you think it’ll get dirty again with upcoming spring showers. Don’t put it off! A good clean now will give you more time later when the weather is warm and you’d rather be enjoying the day instead of cleaning. It’s also a good time to go ahead and declutter the garage or storage shed. These areas tend to end up being a catchall and can fill up quickly. A day spent decluttering and organizing your garage will give you peace of mind and help prepare you for the upcoming season.
