We’ve hit the month of July which also means we are halfway through the summer school break. While summer time is full of vacations, camps, and extra times with friends and family, finding activities to fill the gaps can be a lot. Don’t fret! We’ve got you covered! We’ve put together a list of ways you can keep your children entertained that also won’t break the bank. Make the most of the summer season and create lasting memories with your kids in Chattanooga!
1. Cool off at local splash pads
We are reaching high temperatures, but that doesn't mean you have to stay indoors. Chattanooga has several splash pads scattered throughout the city, providing a perfect opportunity for kids to cool down and have a blast. Take them to places like Coolidge Park or Warner Park for hours of water-filled fun.
2. Visit Chester Frost Park
Speaking of splash pads, Noog Splash at Chester Frost offers inflatable fun on the water for all ages. They even have a Mini Splash for the little ones! You’ll also find a playground, picnic areas, and walking trails to enjoy. Another fun activity would be to take everybody camping.
3. Explore the Tennessee Riverpark
The Tennessee Riverpark offers scenic trails, beautiful river views, and ample space for outdoor activities. Take your kiddos biking, walking, or rollerblading along the riverside and enjoy a picnic in one of the designated areas.
4. Visit the Creative Discovery Museum
Wait! Before you keep scrolling, you may not know that on select days throughout the summer, the Creative Discovery Museum offers free admission for children and their families. Let your kids unleash their creativity through interactive exhibits, science experiments, and hands-on activities.
5. Enjoy outdoor movies at Coolidge Park
Every Friday night during the summer, Coolidge Park hosts free outdoor movie screenings. Pack a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy a family-friendly movie under the stars.
6. Explore the Chattanooga Public Library
The Chattanooga Public Library hosts various free events and activities for kids throughout the summer. The library isn’t just for reading anymore. It also houses a 3-D printer, screen printing, The Noise Closet, countless classes, a virtual escape room, and more!
7. Discover nature at Audubon Acres
With 130 acres to explore, you’re sure to enjoy endless hours of fun. Audubon Acres offers hiking, water access, audio tours, and various exhibits. They also have Music @ the Acres. From 1pm-4pm on Saturdays, enjoy acoustic music at the visitors center which is free and open to the public.
8. Visit the Chickamauga Dam lock
Kids who love boats and engineering will be fascinated by the Chickamauga Dam Lock. Watch as boats are lifted and lowered through the lock system and learn about the mechanics behind it. It's an educational and entertaining experience.
9. Hidden Hills farm play days
On the 2nd Friday and 4th Thursday of each month, visit Hidden Hills Farm and Saddle Club is a day full of unstructured play and exploration. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy pony rides, chicken wrangling, petting our other farm animals, playing in the dirt, a hayride and other outdoor/farm activities.
10. Volunteer to care for animals
Depending on the age of your children, another great way to entertain your kids and benefit a local shelter is to volunteer! Nonprofits like the Humane Educational Society is always looking for volunteers to help around the shelter. They have opportunities for all ages to get involved including bathing, walking, and cleaning as well as prepping enrichment toys, reading, and being an animal ambassador for younger kids. Be sure to check out their website here to find out how you can get involved!
