Heritage House is hosting a classic movie showing, beginning with Moulin Rouge, with free admission and popcorn on the third Thursday of the month. The artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec frequently visits Paris' bohemian sub-culture in and around the burlesque palace cabaret known as Moulin Rouge, where he drinks cognac and draws sketches of the dancers and singers. Though the son of a French count, Henri's legs were badly deformed by a childhood fall, and his personal life is often unhappy as a result. While he is going home one night, he befriends a spirited young woman of the streets. Henri is subsequently torn by his need to balance his personal feelings, his artistic abilities, and his family name and position. Directed by John Huston, Moulin Rouge stars José Ferrer as Toulouse-Lautrec, with Zsa Zsa Gabor as his friend Jane Avril. The stunning Technicolor cinematography is by Oswald Morris. Nominated for seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Costume Design, and Art Direction, and Editing), the film won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1953.
